Twenty years ago, I met a man that had moved here to continue writing and live in a city known as the Heart of Route 66.  The Iconic Charm of Kingman was not lost on him.  He never liked to tell people he had done anything special.  He liked to tell stories that needed to be told.  He is an investigative reporter, with a knack for getting the truth.  Like Joe Friday, Just the Facts.  He’s an editorialist but writes about the facts not his feelings.  He has been a researcher, an agriculture teacher, a shop teacher, a Mayor in Oregon, his alphabet soup rarely follows his name, BS, Ma, PhD.  He has written for Professional Journals, Newspapers, Websites.  He has awards too numerous to hang on his study walls.  I am leaving his name a mystery for now, to see if you can guess his name before I reveal it.

He was writing books while caring for his second wife.  She passed away from Cancer.  He quit for a while after publishing with a self-publishing house.  He was less than thrilled with the lack of follow thru on their part of the project.  After a couple of years, the insatiable urge to write came back with a vengeance.  He decided to write the hardest book of all, one that told his story.

He had a lot of old photos that needed restoration, and that is why he had to track me down.  He knew a photographer in the digital age could probably restore the old pictures.  The oldest was 1890.  The youngest was 1968.  Wow, that was fun. 

In the process of restoring the photos he needed to format them into the book.  Not as easy as it sounds, I could not believe what the self-publisher thought editing and cover page creation was.  Yikes!  I said we can do this better. Then I saw what they call marketing and it cost 10,000 a month.  He got out of that contract and we decided to move forward.  He had me consult him and teach him how to do what needs to be done, and the new Book emerged Dragging a publishing company with it.  The first book of this Publishing Company is “Amazing Dust Bowl Adventures.” The patriarch of the family had gone to Kansas after his own mother died from the 1918 flu epidemic.  The dust bowl hit Kansas and our main character of the book, the author, was born in 1932.   The Dust and Grasshoppers caused the great migration to the West that John Steinbeck wrote about in “Grapes of Wrath.” Where many went to California, this family went to Oregon, where the father had been born.

This Family went through a lot of adversity and each disaster gave them a new adventure.  Determination, pluck and faith carried them through.  You see history unfold before your eyes.  You see the motivation and the opportunities they had to improve their lives from migrating Camp Workers harvesting farms, to our main character’s adulthood and PhD.  It is a truly amazing heartfelt book, that will have you saying “Oh No!” one minute, laughing the next.
