BULLHEAD CITY – An out of state resident visiting Bullhead City lost his life trying to save his son who went missing in the Colorado River Saturday. Police responded to the Community Park Beach at 3:00 p.m. Saturday following a report that an eight-year-old boy went under the water and did not surface.

Police department spokeswoman Emily Fromelt said beach patrol officers, family members and others searched the water, bringing the boy to the surface. CPR was initiated and the boy was reported to be in good condition when it was learned his father was missing.

Fromelt said fire department personnel found the father, Juan Alvarez Ontiveros, 58, on the bottom of the river about ten feet under the surface. He was rushed to a Western Arizona Regional Medical Center where he subsequently died.

Fromelt said Ontiveros’ hometown is unclear due to indications of possible residency in Los Angeles in California as well as Reno and Las Vegas in Nevada.
