KINGMAN – He wanted lunch with some friends on a non-windy, but still toasty, September afternoon.
Instead of a car or a bike, Alexander Ortiz, a rodeo bronc and bull rider, rode his horse, Johnny Cash, downtown from his ranch near the Hualapai Foothills.
It was a nearly 10-mile round trip, but he had some suds and sandwiches with a few of his friends and managed to get home intact.
“Crossed a few rattlesnakes,” Ortiz said. “Cash and I just let ‘em go by.”
The horse has had a few bouts with snakes before but knows to avoid them.
Ortiz said he rode all the way from the foothills and down through Slaughterhouse Canyon.
Cash and Ortiz got separated for a bit but managed to meet back home.
