KINGMAN – An Oklahoma woman busted while smuggling dangerous drugs through Mohave County sobbed as she entered a plea agreement in Kingman on Thursday. Judge Doug Camacho stopped the hearing to make certain that Berta Montalvan, 32, was okay and that she wanted to go forward with the deal.

“I think it’s in my best interest to do this, your Honor,” Montalvan said. She pleaded guilty to transporting narcotic drugs for sale and child abuse by domestic violence.

Montalvan was westbound on Interstate 40 when the vehicle she was driving was stopped within the Kingman city limits on March 16. Deputy County Attorney Phillip Delgado said suspicious behavior prompted a DPS Trooper to summon a K/9 that alerted on the vehicle.

Delgado informed the Court that the Trooper discovered Montalvan’s 11-year-old son lying across the back seat in an unbuckled state. He said a box containing 2.3 pounds of highly toxic fentanyl was found in close proximity to the boy, his clothes, and backpack.

That some of the dangerous drug was leaking from packaging exposed the boy to potential harm, Delgado said. He said Montalvan had picked up the drugs in California for intended delivery in Oklahoma.

Terms of the deal require Judge Camacho to impose a 5-year prison term at an Aug. 31 sentencing hearing.
