Kingman’s Literacy Program strives to build family literacy

KINGMAN – Kingman families will soon have the opportunity to learn how to make reading a central part of home life through a new family literacy program. Family literacy emphasizes the importance of children and caregivers learning together through reading at home. Thanks to the efforts of the Kingman Area Literacy Program (KALP) and several local and state organizations, Kingman families will have tools to improve learning efforts at home.

“This truly is a multi-organization effort,” said Erin Roper, KALP Director. “Angle Homes, Inc. provided the funds we needed to start the program, Mohave Community College is providing meeting space, the Venture Club of Kingman will provide volunteers, and Read Better Be Better is providing the curriculum and program support.”

Families will attend an orientation session on Thursday, Oct. 7 at 6 p.m. at Mohave Community College’s Beale Street Center. Caregivers will meet with staff members from Read Better Be Better to learn about the program and get a home literacy kit while kids enjoy a story time and craft with volunteers from Venture Club. All families will receive a copy of the story time book to enjoy at home together.

“It’s an amazing opportunity for caregivers who want to help improve their child’s reading, especially reading comprehension,” said Roper. “The Program Coordinators support the family throughout the entire program.”
During the free six-week program, families will read together at home twice a week for 30 minutes. The first run of the program will accept 15 to 20 families that have a second, third, or fourth grade student in the home. Participating families will receive a literacy kit, book, and assistance from Read Better Be Better staff and the Kingman Area Literacy Program.
